That photo is of Paradise. Those are Ponderosa’s and they are fire resistant, plus the winds were so bad they didn’t have time to burn high. Does that make sense?? Like a slow burn and more trees would have burned. I suspect the same with Maui, perhaps the winds, like you said which were fast, didn’t have time to burn high.

You are absolutely correct. I was sure it was Paradise, as I read everything I could about it, those pines are not in HI. DH has seen all kinds of strange things going on in wildfires. One house spared, another right next door burned to the ground, live trees surrounding burned houses, etc.
THere is a cottage industry of making up stuff about the Lahaina fire, for some reason. There were two other fires, Puelo and Kula.
Sequoia are resistant to fire as are redwoods to a certain extent. Ponderosas are green matchsticks.
