It was reported during WWII that Sikhs were well known to be the fiercest knife fighters in the World. The Japanese were very wary of them.

The Gurkhas were pretty tough customers too. I recall reading of an incident in Burma in which Gurkhas who were attacking a Japanese position were seen throwing down their rifles so they could use their kukris more effectively.
