Thanks for the reply. I had little knowledge of the number of attempts, nor how many were in the Soviet era by Soviets. I note the phrase, "crushed by atmospheric pressure before impact." So in terms of the article which spawned this thread, sounds like man-made probes often were expected to fail. What might one make out of the UFO/UAF tales then?

--- "Wanting to explore and learn is a good thing and science, physics, mathematics and the like are part of those things which also gave you the computer or phone you use to type and post on FR. Without them you wouldn't. Not to mention your home, everything in it and you vehicles and your plain old meal semi."

I have no problem with exploration. I use a distinction between "belief" and "knowledge" as less-supported and more-supported propositions along a spectrum of human thought. And so we use words differently. I have no "belief" in science, because it for me demands no "belief." This remains an interesting bugaboo for the AI types, trying so hard to replicate that which we are no where near to replicating.

A reference in that regard: Glossary of Cognitive Science, Charles Dunlop and James Fetzer, Paragon, 1993. It's short, concise and a good starting point for lots of notions. And cheap, via the used book sites.

I don't "believe" my "plain old meal semi" (by which you mean metal, I am sure, since us older guys and typing....) will function, because I "know" it will.

As to "everything," I compliment the trash guy when he comes by, the lineman when he repairs our connectivity, and more. The little guys, not the politicians, make the world work. Usually politicians screw thing up. Sometimes royally.

Best wishes, with the thought that we likely both shoot reasonably straight. Likely in the same direction too, when all is said and done.

This is a very important point. Although the faithful try to claim it is, science is NOT a religion.

This antiquated frame of mind is a hold over from the ignorant middle ages. Where “everything not of the Church is an “opposing Religion” against the Church and to be destroyed”.
