The problem is that saying “we don’t know what it is” when you are just afraid to talk about what it is—well, that is a good time to sit down and stay quiet.
I remember when you described how the Indians in Virginia or Massachusett might have felt when they first saw the white mans' sailboats offshore as being magical white clouds blown along by the wind (your phrase was more eloquent but I can't remember it). The Indians had no frame of reference for what was about to happen.
I think we are in the same position.
