Out of respect for an Army buddy who has multi-multi deep family ties in Virginia, henceforth I now say “The War of Northern Aggression” instead of “The Civil War” or the “War Between the States”. I’ve been a naturalized Texan since 1976, when I reported for duty at Fort Bliss.

Our ADA battery had striking similarities to Easy Company: our CO couldn’t read a map to save his life, my friend was unflappable and always made the right decision, like Dick Winters, and I was a damn good Platoon Leader, thanks to the training from my 3 platoon sergeants, all had at least one tour in Nam.

We hadn’t seen each other for 40+ years, oh how the memories flooded back.
