I know a person in NJ that was trying to get any news on their Dad that was in the hospital during Covid. They never got anywhere over the phone or in person at the desk.
After days of the run-around they sneaked into the hospital and finally found him. He had on a diaper that hadn’t been changed in days, vomit on his shirt, etc. He was in a large room with similar patients in beds. They put him in a wheel chair and took him out the front door!
Horrifying!
I live in NJ, and I’d imagine the problems are national; when a friend was hospitalized we set up a rotation so they were rarely unaccompanied (because you will just be ignored otherwise). Another took an unpaid leave of absence to stay with a parent because the patient was found in a similar state (unchanged diaper, uncovered in a cold hospital).
I pity those without someone to look out for them, and I suspect this will worsen as more people are childless.
