How can the universe “expand”? There must be something beyond the expansion line. Is there a man standing at that line with a sign saying, “Stop you can go no further”?

If there’s something beyond that line, then what is expanding no longer meets the definition of “universe”.

to be devil's advocate, why? most of the observable universe is nothing, and it seems like there would be some pretty good sized collisions if there was 'something beyond the line'
