Colorado State Fair updates digital art competition rules after last year's AI controversy

Intense controversy immediately brewed at last year’s Colorado State Fair when an artificial intelligence-generated submission won the first-place prize in the amateur division of the fair's digital arts competition.

The entry became so high-profile that state fair staff placed a rope barrier in front of the entry as a security measure to preserve and protect it.

The entry, called “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” and submitted by Pueblo West’s Jason Allen, sparked online debate and attracted international attention as artists sparred over whether it should qualify as art. The Washington Post labeled the discourse surrounding it as “the writing of a new chapter in art history.”

It’s possible that discussion may continue this year as the Colorado State Fair announced last month that art created using “generative AI software” will still be eligible and judged in the Digital Art category at the Fine Arts Show this year. Entrants, however, must now state if they used any AI software in their submission.

This is easy to solve, have them paint at the fair, give each(human and AI) 3 days, and the best judged wins. AI would be probably done in 15 minutes, and if it loses would go to Kamala Harris and scream discrimination.

That’s quite fascinating.

My son and three neices all do digital art (along with traditional oils, acrylics, water colors, and sculpture). Even a digital piece can take them days.
