A High Point Family Wants Answers After Police Officer Kills Their Dog

High Point police say a black lab charged at the officer, and was shot and killed. The family says that isn't what happened.

A family in High Point is trying to wrap their heads around why their family dog was shot and killed by a police officer Sunday morning.

High Point police said on Sunday around 9:50 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of Homewood Avenue.

Police said a woman called about a German Shepherd in her yard that wouldn’t leave. That neighbor told WFMY News 2 that she has two children and a small dog and was scared to let them out with the German Shepherd roaming around outside.

Police said the officer wasn’t able to get close to the German Shepherd without it running away but was told that the dog belonged to someone down the street and went to the home to try to talk to the owner.

When the officer pulled up, police said a black Labrador (lab) came from behind the home and charged at the officer who ended up shooting and killing it.

Police said the officer shot the dog four times from about seven feet away.

Homeowner, Adam Barnes told WFMY News 2 that Hank, the 65-pound black lab, wouldn't hurt a fly and has never charged at anyone.

"The fact of the matter is, is that he didn't make a good decision and it cost our family our dog. And he was more than just a dog, he was a family member," Barnes continued, "we have lost one of our most prized possessions in the world."

Police said no one was in the yard or driveway at the time of the shooting.

The Barnes family said that isn't true.

High Point police said there will be an internal investigation.

The officer is not on administrative leave.

4 shots in a black lab? Yeah, no.

Four shots. What is conveniently missing is how many hit the charging dog.

Sounds like self defense. Case closed.

Can the police ever do anything wrong to you? Have you seen an article, and you thought "what they did was wrong?"

Police wonder why people hate them.

“Only dog that ever bit me was a lab. I was about 10 and riding my bike up the street past the owner’s driveway, and the dog ran out and nailed me on the right hip before I even knew it was there. My dad spoke to the owner, and there was no more trouble from that dog. That was in the days before people sued each other over anything or nothing.”

Same thing happened to me but it was a German Shepherd. Nipped me on the ankle. The owner threw me into his car, drove to where mother worked, told her what happened, and took me to the hospital. In other words, he took full responsibility. Our families became very good friends. Yep, it was a different time back then.

There is no situation on God’s green Earth that the presence of a cop will not make worse.

I will second that.

“If that is as reported”

And that is the problem. Far too many times it is not as reported. They will cover their ass with no mercy, compassion, or remorse at all. Their badge gives them 100% benefit of the doubt and their word is never questioned.

Read the news? They are caught doing this daily. And have been for years. Only video outs them for their lies.

Why did it take four shots into a Dog to stop it? It didn’t... one or two would have stopped the threat. The officer was a coward and afraid of Dogs. What else might the officer shoot without discretion because of cowardice?

You know that, how? Because a cop said so?

Reno probably loves the taste of boot polish.

Silly question, look at my comment history. While my dad was a cop and I grew up around cops, I am very cynical and suspicious. I think body cams and citizens with video recording capabilities has been a boon to catching them acting bad.

But a charging dog is self-defense. I'd shoot one as well.

Again, how many hit the dog, how many missed. I bet there is a good chance only one hit the dog, three missed.

Well, it’s High Point. If it’s not Emerywood, it’s a ghetto

“three missed”

Could those have hit innocent bystanders? What about this danger?

Was the dog actually a threat? Or should a ticket for not having it on a leash be in order instead?

No... Now days it is shoot first and ask questions later “just in case”.

I was a garbage man for over seven years and I never felt the need to shoot a dog... But I am not a coward, dogs sense this cowardice.

Well if the officer needed 4 shots to put down a black lab at point blank range, he shouldn’t be out killing family pets on tax payer dollars. He should be a meter maid.

In the old days, there were a LOT more loose dogs, and a lot more mutts. Larger jurisdictions had dog catchers, who didn’t have tasers or pepper spray. Were they armed? How did they do their job?

He was in fear for his life or maybe his hearing.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

He may have been in fear for his hearing, so he fired four shots from his gun.

That’s good reasoning right there, I tell ya. You are cop material for sure!

I had a Black Lab many years ago. Gentlest dog on God’s Green Earth, big as he was he was a puppy dog at heart.

He got sick and I had to put him down.

Broke my heart. Miss the old boy every day.

Police love to shoot family dogs so there is no reason to automatically believe this dog actually charged in an aggressive way. There was just a case where the police officer shot a dog wagging its tail and then continued to shoot as the dog tried to run away. Caught on video. Based on the dog type the I would start by assuming this was a bad shoot.

“But a charging dog is self-defense. I’d shoot one as well.

There was a time in this country when a if a cop discharged his weapon in a populated area four times no less at a charging dog, a fecking Lab, he’d have been shitcanned for being stupid, crazy or a complete pussy. Feminize the job and this is what you get.

Now watch the HPPD fight like hell to suppress the badge camera video.
