My grandfather was born in 1900. During WWI he worked as a “fireman” for the railroad. Not sure how long that lasted.

God bless these fine people.
3 boys, 6 girls. (Can I say that)?

Things improved for him, after the war. He died in 1969. I have cousins by the bushel.

All the best !

I would say that with steam locomotives, a fireman on the railroad would be up front with the engineer, ensuring that the fire was hot and well-fed with coal to keep the steam pressure up in the proper range.
