Interesting question. I have commented before on the obvious parallels between HB's bizarre self-destructive behavior and Sigmund Freud's Oedipus complex.
Freud had a habit of turning real events from a person's childhood into phantasies. For example, he found rampant early-childhood sexual abuse amongst his upper-class female patients in Vienna early in the 20th century; but, instead of calling out the people who were paying his bills (i.e., those sexually abusing families of his patients), he created the fiction of "Infantile sexuality" and proceeded to blame the young women for imagining their own sexual abuse and hence creating their own neuroses.
I've often wondered whether Freud didn't employ the same strategy when mapping out his psychoanalytic techniques related to boys/men. If so, then a male (e.g., HB) acting as-if suffering from the Oedipus complex might be exhibiting the signs REAL sexual abuse at the hands of one or both parents.
NOTE: I probably disagree with 99% of Freud's work, with the exception of his genius early work on the structure (not the contents!) of the unconscious mind. But he is must reading if one is interested in depth psychology.
