VILNIUS, July 10 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to forward to parliament Sweden's bid to join the NATO military alliance, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday, on the eve of a NATO summit in Vilnius.

"I'm glad to announce ... that President Erdogan has agreed to forward the accession protocol for Sweden to the grand national assembly as soon as possible, and work closely with the assembly to ensure ratification," Stoltenberg told a news conference.

So what does Grand Mufti Erdogan get in return? Another 10 million Turks into Germany?

I don’t think NATO wants Sweden in their organization. They’ll have to put up with Gretel Thunderbutt’s BS.

Grand Mufti Erdogan wants to become the Emporer of a new and improved Ottoman Empire.

He believes Russia might break apart and he is trolling for a few chunks.
Hopefully one of the Stans with some oil.

So what does Grand Mufti Erdogan get in return?

Erdogan said it was time to act on Turkey’s long-stalled bid to join the EU. “Turkey has been waiting at the gate of the European Union for over 50 years now,” he said, and “almost all NATO member countries are European member countries.”

Say whatever you want but NATO has virtually eliminated Kinetic war in Europe.
the only outcasts are Russia.
as to my comment stay focused on Europe, Asia is a different story.
Bottom line is the world has outgrown dictators with dreams of empire.
War is bad for business.

I sense an Elephant Walk (F-16) in Erdogan’s future.

What may have cinched it: "Sweden will actively support efforts to reinvigorate Türkiye’s EU accession process, including modernisation of the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and visa liberalisation."

He got something of significance, but Turkey is probably further from gaining EU membership today than it was when it applied in 2005. The EU could unfreeze Turkey’s candidacy status, but the underlying issues that caused the freeze are unsolved. I guess Erdogan could still spin that as a diplomatic win at home, giving Turks false hope that they will finally be “part of Europe”.

I don’t know what the EU gains other than a nation that’s a bigger ‘deadbeat’ economically then Greece!

Exactly. To NATO, Turkey brings the 2nd largest Army and control of the Black Sea. To the EU, a basket case economy, a horrible record of human rights abuse and lack of freedom.

Islam has Sweden.

The swedes just don’t know it.
Now they just get to wait for the cleansing.

That’s traditional.

ought-six...what happens now?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66160319

Asked about opposition from Budapest, Mr Stoltenberg said that “Hungary has made it clear that they will not be the last to ratify”.

“I think that problem will be solved,” he added.

But Ukraine will be left out in the cold because they won’t meet the criteria, just like Sweden didn’t?

Bottom line is the world has outgrown dictators with dreams of empire.

Don't tell that to the globalist, who want to rule over and control the entire planet.

Yup; all that is true.

Erdogan has his facts wrong: The EU wasn’t even founded until 1993, just thirty years ago.

“ought-six...what happens now? ... But Ukraine will be left out in the cold because they won’t meet the criteria, just like Sweden didn’t?”

Easy. The NATO protocol requires unanimous consent for new members; that was lacking with Sweden. If Turkey and Hungary vote to accept Sweden, it is in. Thus, it would have met the protocol.

Ukraine still doesn’t meet it — including the fact it is a nation at war, which is an automatic disqualifier — let alone still requiring unanimous consent of all (soon to be 32) NATO members. That’s why I said the NATO protocol would have to be rewritten to bring Ukraine into NATO.

10-4 Sparky. Roger that Sparky. Okey Dokey Sparky.

You still think there are rules and that people play by them.

All you have to do is watch video of Biden at the beach and walking with King Charles to know that he isn’t in charge of anything.

He and the others will do as they’re told.

If they’re told to let Ukraine in, Ukraine is in.

When that happens, US troops on the ground. Just what war mongers want.

Good grief; you are childish.

I cite facts — which you can’t refute — and so you imply that rules are passe`, and that people who play by the rules are...what? Passe`, as well?

I believe in the rule of law, upon which this country was founded; because, without that, there is anarchy, and chaos, and barbarism. The fact you are still alive — as evidenced by your posting here on FR (unless, of course, you are not YOU, but rather an AI bot or some other creation) — is testament to the rule of law. But, you are too dim to realize it.

And what the hell does Biden embarrassing the country yet again have to do with the NATO protocol? HE can’t change it; and I guarantee he can’t convince the governments of all the other NATO countries to change it — because that is what it would take to admit Ukraine into NATO under the current circumstances.

“If they’re told to let Ukraine in, Ukraine is in.”

You are assuming there is some Big Brother, or Wizard of Oz, or secretive global hegemon whose bidding must be obeyed. That is the stuff of midnight AM radio. It is not reality.
