4th of July was different this year. Every year for probably the past 18 years we’ve gone to the fireworks here in town. Someone built a condo complex with a store in the front. I got to know the owner.

He let me park in his parking lot which is right across the street from where they light off the fireworks. Eventually he sold it because of a divorce.

I got to know the new owner. He let me park there too. I back in right across from the parking lot entrance/exit. I’m always the first out of there. So this year I pull in and Scotty isn’t there BBQing and hanging with his friends. I go in the store and ask the manager there, “Where’s Scotty?”. I’m informed that he sold the store.

I had to buy some Solo cups so we can drink alcohol legally and I asked the dude at the register who bought the store. “I did” he responds. He’s an Asian Indian dude, couldn’t be North of 35. I congratulated him and related my story. He said, “as long as you don’t block the parking spaces in front of the store, you are most welcome.”

This was the last year we’ll be doing those fireworks. Next year I plan to be in NH full time.

Fourth of July stories... I was really excited when we moved to Colorado that fireworks are legal here, to a degree. But my neighbor drives to Wyoming and they light lovely ones in their yard.

This year, due to my son’s puppy not being vaccinated, they opted not to come over. And then... right on cue, about 4-5 pm? Thunder and lightening until 9 pm lol!

Apparently this is very unusual for summer. But it was great! I did almost walk over to the neighbors with a chair 😂😂.

11 years on this island and I have never seen so many people in town for the Independence Day celebrations.

The harbor was crammed with cruising yachts. The streets were crowded with Out-of-Towners wearing matching (Cruise ship) jackets and T-shirts.

Parades, log rolling, herring toss, plank race, food, Food FOOD and MORE FOOD!... All the small town celebrations you can imagine. The Volunteer Fire Department, The Sons of Norway, Devils Thumb Shooters,...Main Street closed for three days of celebrating.

Did I mention fireworks?

Just WOW!

“Alaska’s Little Norway” threw a classic American 4th of July celebration in the blistering 65 degree weather.
