How can one be redistributionist without being leftist?

That’s how European conservatives are. They’re fine with socialized healthcare and subsidized higher education and that sort of thing, while at the same time tending to be Christians with traditional social values and general supporters of free enterprise. They are likely to be nationalists who reject immigration and always vote against the leftist parties in their parliament. Their acceptance of a generous welfare state with a strong redistributionist role will follow from a sense of pragmatism or basic fairness or Christian charity or community mindedness rather than leftist doctrine.
