This is taking place in the context of the demographic collapse of Ukraine. At the time of the fall of the USSR and the independence of Ukraine her population was over 51 million. That dropped to 31 million by 2022 before the war. Now there are 8 million refugees (many draft-age men avoiding conscription), not to mention millions in the new independent Republics in the East aligned with Russia. Crimea had a pre-War populatiom of almost 2 million. Donbass was the most densly populated oblast in Ukraine with over 4 million people.

There will probably be some space labeled "Ukraine" on the map after this ugly war finally grinds down to its inevitable conclusion. But Ukraine as a vibrant mid-sized nation is probably beyond saving at this point.
