The Titanic was known to be in trouble before it sailed. There was a fire in the coal locker that could not be extinguished. The fireman crew walked out in protest, but were replaced by another crew. After they reached the halfway point, Captain Brown was told that the fire was causing distortion of structural members. He ordered the ship to move briskly, hoping to reach New York before suffering rupture. The iceberg was an additional peril, impossible to dodge at the higher speed.

I could be wrong, but always thought it was Captain Smith. 😊

Interesting and never knew that. I did know that large amounts of coal can spontaneously combust as utilities constantly turn their coal piles.

Sailor: There is a fire down below!
Captain: Not to worry we will have it out by the time we get to New York.
