The item I saw was a revised statistic that China has about half as many 5-year-olds as 10-year-olds.
If true, that's not falling off a demographic cliff. That's riding a Wile E. Coyote rocket straight down the cliff face while wearing roller skates.
You can take any given official statistic coming out of China and make a safe bet that the truth is worse, for China.

I believe that China’s demographic death spiral is far greater than what is being told. According to research done by Jiang Quanbao and colleagues with the institute for population and development studies at Xian Jiaotong University the UN and China’s ‘official’ population numbers were overestimated. This was based on the fact that China’s newborns in 2020 were 25% lower than the U.N. estimate.
I believe that the current trajectory China’s demographics are on, would put their population at 700 million by 2060 not 2100.
Many in the west talk about demographics being the end for the EU but the same can be said for China. China’s aging faster than any nation on record.
