If the company didn’t request the rescue operations then perhaps they’re not on the hook for them. But certainly lawsuits unless the participants signed wavers.

I wonder why the vessel wasn’t tethered by a cable to the support ship.

Maybe they drove the vessel somewhere where the propellor got tangled up.

Well, like the story says “we don’t have a 13,000 foot cable”.

I imagine they could have one made, but they were set on building an independent submersible, not a diving bell. And maybe the cable would have cost more than the vessel they actually built.

it would have caused so much force on the sub that ocean currents would move the sub where ever they are going. Or most likely, would have simply ripped the hook from the sub.
