We have had a similar thing happen here with the finding of a 5-7000 year old American Indian site next to highway 112 in Arkansas which is going to be widened. Some are screaming for the highway dept to leave it alone. It is now being excavated and examined. Most likely when archeology exams are done it will be destroyed to widen a very dangerous road.
Same thing happened when Hwy 412 here was built.
I saw the same thing happen on the La Plata Highway in northern NM. An Indian ruin destroyed after it had been thoroughly examined.
I’ve driven some on the roads in that part of the country. Very scenic, but, my goodness, not a good place to have an oops moment.
