re: Very interesting story. I need help understanding this part:
I, too, would like to know as sadly I got tied up at the East Coast Garden Club — thinking it has something to do with The Manchurian Candidate’s Garden Club and can’t get back on track.

I’m sorry if my post #1687 is to blame. Perhaps the correct term is “Garden PARTY Republican.”
I think it was an article by Pat Buchanan in National Review in the early- to mid-90s that used that phrase to describe the sort of Republican who looked down his or her nose at the new converts to the GOP (Southerners, Evangelicals, Pro-Life People, White “ethnics,” etc.) and preferred being in the permanent minority.
Y’know, that scene in The Manchurian Candidate works, too. The soldiers imagined similar educated upper-middle-class women meeting in Atlantic City for their annual Garden Club convention. I think these are exactly the type Pat Buchanan was referring to.
At one of his speeches in 96 at State Convention, he warned us about China and was soundly hissed at and booed at from the right side of the room, which was full of the establishment Republicans. It was also a minority. My state sent his delegates right to the convention. As I recall, so did Texas delegates. At the time I was shocked at what happened. Most favored nation trading status was simply a form of modern slavery as the communist Chinese peasants, slave laborers so American politicians and wealthy can get even more rich. That’s a fact. All politicians would plunder us. Just as Patton said, “a politician is the lowest form of life”. Now he did say “a Democrat is the lowest form of politician” so there is that. The GOPe always has ethics issues.
