Some things are inconsequential. Some are major issues.

You have to pick your battles and realize you’re not going to get your way every time.

It’s very important to set some high and clear expectations of one’s spouse and symmetrically of one’s self — with lines not to be crossed. Some of those WILL be tested at various points in a marriage, so agreement and clarity are crucial. Some of these are made explicit in the old-fashioned wedding vows (which, alas, couples rarely exchange these days); others appear in both Old and New Testament; and once in a while others are idiosyncratic to the couple.
