Tolkien's heroes were often more counter heroes: Hobbits (Halflings) who enjoyed their pipe weed, a mug of ale - and NO adventures; Gandalf, the reluctant interventionist who took on a Balrog, an ancient fire demon of Morgoth from the First Age.

My favorite moment in the entire trilogy is Gandalf’s stand at the broken gate of Minas Tirith, he faces down the King of the Ringwraiths, then the cock crows as Sauron’s darkness starts to fail, then the horns of Rohan...
