Years ago I dated a South African woman. That resulted in my first three visits...all of which were before Mandella. She lived in a quite affluent suburb of Johannesburg that reminded me of the time I spent lost in Palos Verdes Estates (LA).

My last visit was to tour some game parks. We chose a nice suburb of Jo'burg as our base and traveled from there. It was nice...there was a Rolls Royce dealership a hundred yards from our hotel...but *everywhere* you looked you saw high walls,gates,barbed wire and signs that said "Protected By XYZ Security: Armed Response".

And then there were the townships.We drove past one of them on the way to Kruger National Park. Absolutely Third World...every bit as bad as what I had seen in Tanzania,Kenya and Malawi.
