When I suggested this idea to our county’s Supervisor of Elections, she said all ballots who have “unauthorized” write-in candidates will be considered “spoiled” and the entire ballot will be thrown out.
In other words, the government decides who they will approve as acceptable “write-in” candidates. I wish I had known that earlier, because I had written in names in previous (local) elections.

any explanation what unauthorized means ? generally if you don't use the legal name, it's out. If you misspell the name, it's out.
