Swamp Gas.
Strangely enough, I have seen swamp gas up close and personal. Amazing, huge ball of fire.
I can only conclude it was methane being sucked into the vacuum created by my car (as I sped down a dirt road next to a marshland). It must have been ignited by my exhaust (long before spark arrestors were added to mufflers).
