People have always moved around and traded back to where they came from and to other places that people moved to.
Why are writers surprised about trade?
Maybe they think everything was created on the spot.

Saw a special on the Sutton Hoo hoard last night - the gems and materials used in the hoard, such the garnets on the two toggles used to hold a sword, were sourced from places as far away as Pakistan.

The prevailing wisdom before this hoard was found was that the Anglo-Saxons didn't have the technology or artisanship to craft such pieces - or the trade networks to source the materials used.

I recall a lecture about Greek science and medicine where they quoted a Greek doctor lamenting that he weren’t able to to Egypt for really advanced study. To their credit, the Greeks were generally willing to acknowledge the profound influence of Egypt on their culture.

There was long distance trade far back into the stone age.
