I agree. However, like scripture, pictures, paintings, sculptures - speak. It's idolatry to worship any object but if an object speaks to us, tells us a story about truth, then it's not idolatry. The Amish disallow any photos of themselves because they consider them idols. When I see photos of my kids and family, I don't worship the picture but I enjoy remembering the person.

When I see a crucifix, I don't worship the crucifix. Rather, it reminds me of the price paid for my sins.

Faith comes by hearing the Word. All hearing occurs in our mind, our heart if you will. The Word can be communicated by varied means. There's the written Word, the spoken Word, the Word that comes when we look on pictures, paintings, sculptures etc., the Word that Jesus speaks to us directly - I think of Paul on the Damascus road.

If the Shroud of Turin serves to remind a person of Christ and His resurrection, then I don't see that as idolatry. On the other hand, when people worship relics then that indeed is idolatry - IMHO.
