I’m sure if you put the clothes on before you get to the gate instead of after the airline catches you with an overweight bag, you could probably get away with it.

My bag was slightly overweight once, the the nice lady behind the counter suggested I take something heavy out of the bag and put it in my carry on. Its all good.

Similar experience, she said one bag was light and just move about 5 pounds from the heavy bag into the lighter one. Not sure how that makes an actual difference but I did it.
