I haven't studied the particular 'issue' with that word, but thought this etym. was kind of interesting:
Akka. erลซ, arลซ (= to conceive)...
Because, in the land named for being the origin of the Sun, "eru" is the word for a large sized-something; e.g. clothing, soft drinks.
Which is to say, how "L" is pronounced. Small, medium, large end up as esu, emu, eru...
Who would ever conceive of this stuff?
