I’m glad you posted this. I was on a tour of a castle in Ireland (Trim Castle) recently and the guide discussed the function of the garderobe. In addition to being a ‘privy,’ it also functioned as a wardrobe for the very reason you cited.
In the past, I would’ve thought ‘bs’ but this guide was so knowledgeable. Now, your confirmation seals it. Fascinating if a little revolting.
