The legislature might be crazy enough to do it, but this plan would cost $800 billion and someone posted that California’s total annual budget is around $300 billion. Hard to see how they could come up with such a sum in addition to normal state budget needs.

It started off with some people on government “relief” in the Depression. Then LBJ set out to eliminate poverty and created federal welfare. Being on the dole lost its stigma and shame. More and more federal give-always started. It bred multiple generations of ne’er-do-wells and layabouts.

Then the southern floodgates opened and the border collapsed — we are adding 3% illegals / welfare mooches to our population in 2023 alone. The logical next step is this reparations crap to steal our wealth.

As you say, all the other grievance groups are lined up in the wings.

Why not make black people demand money from the state or states where their ancestors were enslaved? That would make more sense...although it's a horrible idea from the get-go.

Maybe they can avoid hostile reactions from Asians and Hispanics by having the reparations come from a fund that only white Californians have to pay into. Or maybe only white Californians who had at least one ancestor living in the US before 1865.

Exactly. Churches and charities took care of the poor at the local level and the shame and stigma of being on the dole was fierce. That’s all gone and we are FAR worse off because of it. Now everybody demands insatiable amounts and the reparations gig is going to blow the doors off of the “free stuff” parade. If we don’t rein this in, the national debt will be $50 trillion then $100 trillion in no time at all. Then our goose is really cooked.

At this point, non-Hispanic whites are only about one third of California's population. Of those, many are of Armenian, Jewish, Persian, Italian, Greek, and similar descent. Their ancestors arrived well after the Civil War. There are not enough descendants of pre-Civil War descended whites to support the proposed reparations.
Therefore, the Hispanic and Asian majority, plus the assorted non-Nordic whites, will carry the burden of reparations.

Why should ANY white pay one thin dime? I don’t care where their ancestors are from or when their ancestors came here. Giving out millions based on skin color, and expecting others to pay for it, based on skin color, is the most outrageous and unjust thing to happen in our time.

The whole notion of reparations is unjust. Maybe it could be justified in the case of Japanese-Americans who were interned during WWII because of actions by the government. But they are talking about vast amounts of money to people for harm done to distant ancestors, but only if they are of the right skin color. It's antithetical to the notion of equality before the law, but that sort of went by the wayside a long time ago with the advent of affirmative action.

The more this is publicized, the more the potential recipients will come to see it as their due. How are the Democrats going to balance the demands from one of their constituencies against the opposition to the idea from everyone who won't be getting money? They can't win elections with the black vote alone.
