The report says the trigger was pulled three times, and three casings (or unfired rounds?) came out of the gun. The photo shows a semi-auto in the kid’s hand. It is impossible to eject rounds with out firing it unless the kid racked the pistol three times, or it’s a toy gun.

It says three bullets were found. I don't know whence the bullets. They didn't have time to try to clear the action and I suspect they did not know how.

It sounds like they might have put 9mm ammo in a .40s&w or a .45 and the rounds just fell out of the barrel they still would have had to rack the slide. They probably racked an additional two times and gave up.
Hopefully when Police find them they will point their gun at police who do know how to use a gun properly.
