You’re right. That’s what makes him a houseplant. A real man who wasn’t afraid of his wife might have said “Oh, for dear God’s sake, Karen, just keep your opinions to yourself this one time so I can bury my mother.” Of course, a good wife wouldn’t have put him in that position to start with, out of respect for both him and his deceased mother.
