I used to own/operate a number of vending machines and always sorted and rolled the US coin. That was back when it cost $1.60 Cdn to buy $1 American. It was very cost effective to sort the coin and deposit the US into a US dollar account. The first sort was always done with a magnet. The Canadian coins jumped onto the magnet while the US coin stayed on the table. Since 2000, all Canadian coins have 90-95% steel as their base metal and are plated with nickel, zinc or copper to add colour. I doubt an American coin would have stuck to my niece-in-law’s arm.
