Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Obama Administration legalized bump stocks. BAD IDEA. As I promised, today the Department of Justice will issue the rule banning BUMP STOCKS with a mandated comment period. We will BAN all devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns. 4:50 PM · Mar 23, 2018.
Personally as life member for more than 50 years, I kind of doubt that the NRA had anything to do with the ban.
In a statement, the influential gun rights group's Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox urged the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the legality of so-called bump stocks. They stopped short of pushing Congress to pass a bill banning or regulating the devices.
"Despite the fact that the Obama administration approved the sale of bump fire stocks on at least two occasions, the National Rifle Association is calling on the [ATF] to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law," the NRA officials said.
"The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations."
House Speaker Paul Ryan said Congress should "look into" whether to make changes around bump stocks. Sen. John Cornyn — the No. 2 Republican in the Senate — on Thursday said "it's worth our serious consideration" to ban the tools.
NRA endorses more regulation on bump stocks that boost guns' firing rates
Trump asked for a review. Trump could not disregard the review, and not sign the ATF regulation change and ignore bumpstocks after they reviewed it. - Well, he could have, but then would have been attacked for not following the law and interferring with the atf.
If 'republicans' are to follow the law, the legislature would have passed something to legalize bumpstocks.
