I know of three fairly good theories. Though I'm working backward from history to figure out who they are. Right now. I'm only now starting to read Homer's iliad now that i know what it was about. The story of the Atlantis war with their colonies. That war took place about 6000 years before Homer. Homer turned it into a story because obviously didn't know everything.
The opening of freaks me out from what i know now.
Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men...

Atlantis name can be interpreted to be the Pleiades (seven sisters. Which one star couldn't been seen at their time. The question is which star are they talking about?)
Now the first words:
"Sing, O goddess" Atlantis god closest understanding of their god is a Nagas serpent god (from India. Which India seems to hold on to much of the Atlantis beliefs.) Which sings Sirens (singing serpent.)
It's going to be a slow read to understand what he is saying and how much Homer actually knew.
