Also, copies of real coinage, regardless of age, sold in the US must have the word “COPY” struck on them.

Must have word “COPY.” That seems to be part of the problem. There are plated copies of way too much stuff around that don’t seem to be marked. Even worse on the bullion side since the plating passes the acid test. One of our local dealers got ripped for 40 G’s buying bricks that checked out in every way except thickness, which he didn’t check since he knew the seller——he thot.
