“that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.”

I also thought this was ridiculous. Had the opportunity to speak with a lawyer who was very familiar with the case. This woman suffered third degree burns, was hospitalized for a period of time and required skin grafts. It was not just a little coffee, it did extensive and permanent damage. There is NO reason for coffee to be this hot, a lot of other issues came out in the case but the bottom line was negligence on the part of the defendant.

Yes, I also read up on that case. The woman actually wanted to settle out of court for a measely $20,000. She just wanted her medical bills paid. She was never looking to "get rich" from having coffee spilled on her.

McDonalds counter-offered $800 and so the case went to court.

Third degree burns at nearly 80 years old on 20% of her body. Over a week in the hospital. Many more weeks of pain. This woman was more than justified in her claim.

Classic example of a lie traveling around the world while the truth is still gettting its pants on.
