In our culture’s present moment of confusion about many basic things, you may well have been wondering what “masculinity” means. Well, have no fear, NPR is here to give you the lowdown on how to properly think of this topic in 2023 in a podcast from their series LifeKit, which magnanimously offers the benighted populace invaluable “tools to help you get it together.”
Here are just a few of the scintillating bits of wisdom dispensed by the (self-proclaimed) cultural experts at LifeKit:
- “Everyone’s [i.e., men are] afraid to be themselves.” Alas, there is no discussion of just how many men were consulted to demonstrate how generalizable this belief is, but such information too often gets in the way of brusque overgeneralizations. Anecdotally, I don’t know a single man who would agree that he is afraid to be himself, but given that to a man they believe… well, that they are men and that, contrary to the insinuation in the NPR podcast, there isn’t anything particularly problematic or complicated about that making that realization, perhaps their fear of being themselves is so deep they don’t even know they have it?
- “Masculinity is about men policing each other about how they’re failing at being real.” I admit I don’t know precisely what this means, but my incomprehension is perhaps an indication that I’m one of those doing the policing, or being policed, or both.
- “Masculinity is… a performance.” Of course it is! Everything is a performance! An important basic rule of Brave New World!
- “Maybe somebody calls you out for ‘mansplaining’ in the office… try to check yourself… apologize and keep it movin’.” Yes, it’s always best just to apologize immediately when you’ve been mansplaining, and, even better, to also promptly anti-mansplain...

It all says, “Whimper a lot.”
We get jazz here for a good part of the night. I have it on at work which is night shift. When the news comes on I switch to the country station.
“Everyone is afraid to be themselves” My translation.
Everyone in traditional religions believes that man has a sinful nature. Their religion is based on requiring people have faith and/or obedience to rules and goals that suppress that sinful nature.
But woke science accepts the fact that human nature is human nature and does not make a judgement of right or wrong, good or bad. Who is to say that a gender identification unique to a small group is better or worse than that of a large group.
Who is to say that theft of shoplifting by the poor is better or worse than the theft of Twitter by Elon Musk?
Like the author, I don't even know what that means.
When I was working in electronic manufacturing 20 years ago there were 2 women “engineers” that watched over the mechanical assembly area. I worked in machine maintenance and would often have to fabricate temporary jigs/tooling for proto builds. The engineers brought a torx screw and an allen wrench and wanted me to modify the allen wrench to work with the torx screw. They were amazed when I produced a torx bit from the tool bin. They didn’t know one existed.
The only thing I listened to regularly on NPR was Car Talk. The rest was drivel. All Things Considered? A better name would be Most Things Ignored. National People’s Radio.... or for their anti-Israel bias, National Palestinian Radio....
Okay I'll give you automatic transmissions and soccer, but I like my coffee creamer.

I will be over here as a Man behaving like a Man
They don’t have enough beta males to provide for the ageing single females; that is what is driving the recent discussions about “the problems with men”. Millions of women are reaching retirement age without anyone to share the costs/risks, and many more millions are lining up behind them as marriage disappears for most. With their longer average lifespan, they need more assets to retire.
None of the solutions involve removing affirmative action which marginalized most men economically; women have been 60% of college classes for decades now (meaning they have the lion’s share of college debt), and men who have no interest in killing themselves to try and attain things they’ve given up on (families, homes) see no point in striving to obtain more than they need for themselves.
American men who want a traditional spouse (and family) can shop overseas if they don’t or can’t find a native one; few men overseas desire an American woman.
Following their popular ("Now, more sanitized!") reincarnation of "Live PD" tomorrow night, the Reelz network is doing a hit piece on John Wayne and so-called toxic masculinity is sure to be part of the story.
Be sure to miss it.
Just tell her that you’re “not afraid to be yourself”.
.
Toxic masculinity. Because when it hits the fans, nobody goes looking for a feminist.
