Oscars 2023: Who Will Win, Who Should Win
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | March 9, 2023 | Scott Feinberg, David Rooney

Best Picture WILL WIN: Everything Everywhere All at Once

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once is the likeliest winner, having swept the guilds’ top honors, including the Producers Guild’s, which is decided on a preferential ballot, and also won Critics Choice and Spirit Award prizes, among many others. But the Academy’s preferential ballot wouldn’t seem to favor such a polarizing film — many Academy members love it, but many others found it incomprehensible — so an upset could come from German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which dominated at the BAFTA Awards (indicating strong European support) and would be Netflix’s first-ever winner in this category, or Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, a critical and commercial triumph that helped to revive theatrical moviegoing. — Scott Feinberg

SHOULD WIN: The Banshees of Inisherin

My heart beats strongest for this two-man civil war tragicomedy, which shows a new maturity and depth of feeling from Martin McDonagh. It assembles a peerless ensemble, each of them etching finely drawn character portraits, not to mention scene-stealer Jenny, the miniature donkey. Todd Field’s caustic reflection on abuse of power, Tár, would be another deserving winner. — David Rooney

I am quite crusty about Hollywood lately, but...need to keep an open mind for aspects of it.

I can match you curmudgeonly scowl for curmudgeonly scowl, but aside from my continuing interest in movies (good movies when we can find them), I am still an unreconstructed culture warrior. I do not subscribe to the view -- which tends to be the default option on FR, unfortunately -- that, "the left dominates the film industry, so let's walk away from movies," hurling anathemas over our shoulders as we head to the catacombs.

We should be digging in and supporting the saving remnant. We can't fight something with nothing. If we want to rebuild the culture, we have to engage the culture. If that begins with building an alternative conservative counterculture, we have to dig in and do the work, or at least support people in the field who are doing it. That's true in every domain: the schools and universities, the churches, state and local government -- and yes, even the film industry.

Good films are still being made. Some of them are actually quite thematically conservative. Many more at least recognize enough complexity and nuance to give conservative themes their innings. And some of these come from filmmakers who may be personally liberal or left, but who want to tell honest stories. Since reality is conservative, that will create openings.

The left is brain dead, spiritually corrupt, and wallowing in nihilism. If we can't provide better answers, the shame is on us.

Oh, we can certainly provide better answers, but they have a stranglehold on the dissemination and analysis of those “better answers”...

Frankly I've been watching many of the Asian films - Korea, China and others. Amazing script writers with great plots and twists. Superb actors who pull you into the character they're playing.

Honestly the actors make Hollywood actors look amateur these days.....and the camera angels and cinematography is wonderful.

I've not seen many Asian films, but last year's Drive My Car was excellent. I went to the theater to see it simply because the critics had been going nuts about it all year and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I don't know how well it translates to couch potato viewing because it is a film that demands full attention, but it was one of the biggest movie surprises I've ever experienced. What are some of your favorites?
