I would have been 9 at the time and completely oblivious to it. I wasn’t listening much to the radio or following the charts back then. I was aware of the Beatles and a few other acts but that was about it.
Dr. Demento on KMET Los Angeles 1972-1987 played fun music for three hours. “The first three hours of the program included various records and the last hour were devoted to the “top 10” where you’d hear such classic recordings as “Star Drek,” “Pencil-Neck Geek,” “Dead Puppies,” “Shaving Cream,” “Fish Heads,” and many more,” such as ““They’re Coming...” Every newspaper had comic strips and every rock radio show had fun music once a week.
There’s still an online weekly show, pay per episode orjoin a club.

And Weird Al making it big by sending in his modern classics.
Thanks. Probably not the same, though, without the “enhancements” of those distant days.
Memorized every word as a fourth grader.
I remember playing that on the jukebox while ordering pizza. The slotcar racetrack was next door. I miss those days.
““They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!,”
Used to hear that song on Dr. Demento. I had no idea it was made all the way back in the ‘60s. ”
KTKT in Tucson played it constantly on the radio when I was a kid.
Ah, slot car racing. Spent a lot of time and money on that in the 60s. I think there are still some tracks out there.
When that song was released they actually played it on the radio. I bought the 45. The b side backwards thing was pretty radical in those days.
great song with memories ...
Dr. Demento was an absolute must-listen back in the day. I even recorded a bunch of shows - at first with a portable cassette recorder next to the radio, then with an integrated cassette when I could afford a stereo system. Unfortunately most of the cassettes didn’t make it over the years - I have a few that were still playable many years ago when I started transferring my old tapes to digital files.
There used to be a place on the internet where some of the original shows were posted for free listen - need to find it again. This world could use a man like Dr. Demento again.
