Sometimes, a big bruise or a broken bone will set off a chain reaction in the immune system. When cells are broken, they spill out mitochondrial DNA. The immune system sees this DNA and launches an antibody attack — not knowing that it is the host’s own DNA. Unless specific steroids and other inhibitors are given quickly, the process spirals out of control and becomes “non-infectious sepsis,” which can lead to massive organ failure and death. (ICD 10 code R65.11 Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) )
All of this is amplified in older people. That is why even minor falls can be dangerous.
