Quite a thinker and his ability to put his thoughts into words. All of his stuff is on the internet.

Here’s part of an essay:

We grant that human life is mean; but how did we find out that it was mean? What is the ground of this uneasiness of ours; of this old discontent? What is the universal sense of want and ignorance, but the fine innuendo by which the soul makes its enormous claim?

Nice passage.

I also skimmed through a few essays/letters with an eye on what’s not to be appreciated. And I was reminded of a consistent impression RWE has imparted over my last 40+ years of occasional perusals. Perhaps not the best nor fairest term, and certainly contradictory to the substance of his writings — it was a tossup between pensive & melancholy.
