There are several types of leukemia - both lymphocytic and myelogenous leukemia come in acute and chronic forms (so, ALL, CLL, AML, and CML). There are other rare leukemias involving red cells, platelets, and monocytes.
ALL would be most common in a 13 year old. The acute presentation often involves bleeding, and bleeding in the brain can cause the picture described.
