Gov. DeSantis chosen appointees would oversee Disney parks in Reedy Creek district under new bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida House on Monday proposed an overhaul of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, including a new name and giving power to Gov. Ron DeSantis to choose the people in charge as the Republican governor punishes Disney over its opposition to the nicknamed “Don’t Say Gay” law.

Gov. Ron DeSantis targeted the Reedy Creek district last year after he clashed with the Walt Disney Co. over the controversial education law that restricts certain classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity.

The 189-page bill (HB 9B) was released on the first day of a special legislative session called, in part, to deal with the Reedy Creek issue. The bill would undo a DeSantis-led move last year to dissolve the taxing district — but would revamp its governance, including its name.

A fundamental problem with the Reedy Creek Improvement District is that its territory includes considerable property not owned by Disney. Being controlled by Disney, the District therefore sets the terms and timing of development for other property owners in a way that benefits Disney and its local allies and sticks it to others.

In addition, the District gives Disney wide exemptions from having to coordinate their infrastructure development with local governments. Disney has therefore used the District to block road and rail projects that it sees as potentially making it easier for its guests to visit other attractions or stay in hotels that are not on the Disney property.

Doesn't matter if you support DeSantis or his reasons for doing this, it sets a terrible, what they give they can take, precedence.

Well that's nothing new. That precident was set a long, long time ago and has been the case all along. Nothing the government gives is safe from being taken away.

The reality is that the government does this all the time all over the country. Much of what the the government takes away that it gave out initially it had no legal right to give in the first place. Much of what the government takes away it has no legal right to take away. The fact of the matter is that the majority of what the federal & state governments do are not constitutional to begin with.

While I have no legal background, I questioned the legal authority the State of Florida had to give these things to Disney in the first place. I questioned it when it happened and I have not changed my mind on that.
