I suppose everything is in the eyes of the beholder. When I was a youngster growing up in South Texas, we ate pinto beans, corn bread, turnips, as well as mustard, turnip and collard greens, Lots of cabbage also. In the summertime we had lots of watermelon. If we had chicken it was usually grilled. My dad would go to the coop and grab a chicken a cut it’s head off. I love all of those things to this day.
Years ago a Black co worker of mine told me of a restaurant in Newburgh, Mary’s Soul Food Kitchen. I must’ve been one of the few White guys who knew about this place🙂 I loved the ox tails with sweet potatoes, collard greens, cornbread and a slice of her delicious apple pie. Guy Fiero the Diners DriveIns and Dives guy would be impressed, it’s that good 😁
