I’m over 50 now and have learned that pain is a great motivator. I have the beginnings of diverticulitis and if I don’t get enough fiber or water in a day I end up with terrible bowel pain. Therefore I’m now naturally careful to eat oatmeal with a pear or apple every day and to drink lots of water daily. The pain itself led me to these changes.

Nice to hear that you have figured out what appears to be a painful issue. Good going!

How much water do you drink? I tend to drink almost a gallon a day. With the water in the food I eat, it’s probably at a gallon. I used to have chronic stomach pains but haven’t had them for a long time.

I’ve battled off and on with diverticulosis/diverticulitis for years now. Comes and goes, usually with long breaks in between. You’re right, water and fiber are key to preventing it, though when you’re experiencing a flare up the opposite is true and low fiber is best.

The other day I also experienced a kidney stone for the first time. The diverticulitis and kidney stone produced by far the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, though the pain from each is slightly different. Both were a solid “10” on the pain scale.
