It depends what the Ph.D. is in. Anything other than in a hard science or math means very little. Of course, "Dr." Jill doesn't even have a Ph.D. She has an Ed.D.
Hubby has a PhD. He doesn’t like to be called “doctor”. Says one woman he knew with an EdD....wrote her paper on “how to arrange a parking lot”. Insisted she be addressed as “doctor”. 🙄😆

Yes, we called all the profs “Dr.” back when I was in college. And many were just as simple-minded as Mrs. Biden. I assume it is still the case.

The truth remains. In any respectable discipline, the Ph.D. represents successful completion of a much more rigorous program of study and original research than a mere MD.

Not just “completion” of research but ongoing research that can contribute to the field continuously. Anyone that has PhD that teaches should be called “Professor”. Anyone with a PhD that works in their field doing continuous research and development, should be called “Doctor” or even “Professor”.
Anyone that completes a PhD then does jack squat with it (Jill Biden currently) should NOT be called “Doctor”.

It’s true that people who have earned a PhD or even a lowly EdD can rightly asked to be called “Dr.” when they are in a teaching position at a university or college. But using it in a high school or any other workplace is pretentious.
I will agree with you for a PHD in physics, chemistry, computer science and other hard sciences. You have to be smarter than the average MDs the schools are turning out these days. While a PHD in climate science, you can generally wipe yer butt w it.
