Memphis cops’ violence and the problem of culture

Two of the smartest and most insightful commentators today, both of whom happen to be black, have spoken words of great wisdom about the outrageous behavior of the Memphis cops that beat to death Tyre Nichols. Both men cite culture, though one, former Detroit police chief James Craig, points to the culture of the Memphis PD and the local culture of the “Scorpion” unit – one that deals with the worst street crime, and the other, Jason Whitlock, points to the broader black culture.

Speaking to Tucker Carlson, Chief Craig (who kept the peace in Detroit while Minneapolis and other cities were burning after the death in custody of George Floyd) spoke of Antifa and other subjects, while criticizing the behavior of the cops – not just the ones that beat on Tyre Nichols, but the ones who stood by and did nothing to stop them and nothing to aid Nichols after his injuries. Organizational culture is a powerful force shaping and regulating behavior. It fills in the details of the rules and regulations that formally exist and creates a sense of what members of the organization “ought” to do. What their internal mental guide tells them is appropriate. It is usually shaped by the behavior of others that they observe, and then see rewarded or punished. It emerges over time and becomes uncomscious.

Also speaking to Tucker on the same broadcast, Jason Whitlock, whom I deeply admire for his genuine wisdom, had the courage to raise the issues relating to black culture.

The problem lies with whatever f’d up standards were used to hire these ghetto gang bangers as cops.

Agreed but the US military has turned thousands of young black men from a lifetime of crime into American patriots. It can be done.

I think these officers would have been better served by less equity inclusion, critical race theory and EEO training and more actual police training. These guys did not seem to have the most fundamental arrest skills.

Its kind of like calf roping the clock starts ticking when the barrier drops. Every second you delay cost you.

For cops the clock starts ticking the second you put hands on someone to make an arrest. Well trained officers can tag um and bag um and have them in the back of the vehicle in under 60 seconds.

Every minute after that bad things start to happen. The uncontrolled perp starts escalating and becoming more agitated. Crowds form, cameras start recording and people start playacting for the cameras.

You don't deescalate the situation on the street you do it when the perp is safely secured in the police vehicle.

Every one of these deaths seems to happen the same way. Resisting arrest, fighting with police. Why a lone idiot thinks they can fight multiple armed people and escape them is beyond me.

How many black women have been killed this way? I can’t think of any. Maybe they are smarter than the men.

Do you, or does anybody else on this forum truly believe 4 black cops beat the living sh!t out of an innocent black man for fun, sh!t and giggles? Followed by 2 white cops arriving on scene and being equally callous and uncaring to this “innocent” man’s suffering?

Not saying what happened was right, but he crossed the line somewhere and screwing another man’s wife sounds about right to me.

What stuns me is the reluctance of the black community to realize that their responses to police stops are a factor in these incidents. After all the incidents - all over the US and involving polices officers of all races - far too many blacks feel it necessary to argue with the police when pulled over for a traffic infraction.
Blacks seem to believe that if they protest loud enough and long enough, the police will release them without a ticket.
As anyone knows who has been sopped by the police (and I've been stopped on numerous occasions) once the police have stopped you, they're convinced in their own minds that you're guilty - and that you're going to get a ticket, regardless of your protestations of innocence.
Any arguing is a waste of time.
If you want to argue, argue with the judge.
With all these tragic incidents, why haven't black people learned this inescapable fact?

These cops reflect that culture.
