Why not?

Wouldn’t you want to know the capabilities of your weapons. My guess is the Air Force hardened those silos significantly after that.

Don’t get me wrong…I am not definitive in my view. It/they could be anything. I just think it makes all of the “cover up” make more sense.

What if, instead of putting nuclear missiles offline, there had been an error and one or more had been fired?

This is one area that shouldn't be messed around with. The fact that this was a UFO hovering over the silos has been the subject of Congressional hearings.

BTW, the Russians had a similar experience with a UFO hovering over silos. At the Russian site, missiles that were offline were turned on (put on "ready to fire" status). Very scary stuff.

Correction: I mispoke. The UFO hovering over nuclear silos was not (as far as I know) the "subject" of a hearing. It was introduced into the record at a hearing.

It might have been discussed in a classified hearing, but, of course, I wouldn't know that.
